The SONC Green and Sustainability committee is working on raising awareness regarding native landscaping, which requires minimal watering but can still look beautiful. The goal is to practrice water conservation while keeping with the style and preferences in the esthetics of our neighborhood. To further this effort, the committee is developing a program with interested Sherman Oaks residents/homeowners to inform the community on how they can create a truly eco-friendly garden, that makes use of native plants, promotes the spread of seeds via wildlife, leverages natural solutions instead of toxic pesticides, and most importantly, that are drought tolerant. We are creating a video library of sustainable garden tours. Any Sherman Oaks resident who wishes to participate by submitting a video tour of their own sustainable garden is welcome to do so. The first example is presented here:

Conserve Our Water and Save Money

Increasing temperatures, groundwater depletion and reduced supply sources suggest that California will experience water shortages with increasing frequency and intensity. Water sustainability requires conservation by all consumers. As with all environmentally friendly measures, protection of resources and reducing consumption can also save you money. New water rates for LADWP customers went into effect on January 1, 2022. For water-saving tips, check out the “go green” and “save money” tabs on the residential portion of the LADWP website:

It is also important to be aware of new water restrictions issued by the State Water Resources Control Board. Fines of up to $500 can be issued for any of the following violations:

  • Outdoor watering that causes run-off
  • Washing a car with a hose that doesn’t have a shut-off nozzle
  • Use of a water feature that doesn’t use recirculated water
  • Landscape watering within 48 hours after measurable rainfall
  • Landscape watering between the hours of 8 AM and 6 PM (9 AM and 4 PM for Los Angeles residents)

Be a part of the solution- save water and save money!

Agenda Requests

The Green & Sustainability Committee conducts its business by reviewing and prioritizing agenda requests for Board action (generally either in the form of a motion or letter) or announcements submitted by stakeholders, governmental entities and other interested individuals and organizations. Green & Sustainability Committee Committee has the discretion to postpone a request, refer it to a specific committee for review and recommendation, treat it as an announcement or consider and resolve it as a non-Board administrative matter.
